Introduction
The Sure Coat automatic powder spray gun electrostatically charges and sprays organic or metallic powder coatings. It is used with a Sure Coat automatic gun control unit, or a Sure Coat Modular Gun Control System, or an iControl system.
Features
See Figure 2-1 or 2-2.
The spray gun features a straight-through powder path, which minimizes surfaces for impact fusion to occur. The rigid powder tube and all powder path components are easy to remove, clean, and inspect.
The negative-polarity, integral power supply (voltage multiplier) is user-replaceable. All spray guns are equipped with gun air to prevent powder from collecting on the electrode.
The quick-disconnect hose connector (1) allows the operator to quickly switch powder feed hoses while performing a color change.
Mounting Configurations
The spray gun is available in both bar- and tube-mount configurations.
Refer to Table 2-1 for a description of the variations available for both mounting configurations.
Theory of Operation
See Figure
The control unit supplies low-voltage dc power to the voltage multiplier in
the spray gun body (2). The multiplier converts the low-voltage dc power to
the high electrostatic voltage needed for powder coating. The voltage
generates a high-strength electrostatic field between an electrode in the
nozzle (3) and the grounded part in front of the spray gun. The electrostatic
field produces a corona discharge around the electrode.
Flow rate air pressure pumps the powder from the feed hopper, through the
feed hose, into the hose connector (1), and out through the spray gun's
nozzle. As the powder particles are sprayed past the electrode in the
nozzle, they pick up an electrostatic charge and are attracted to the
grounded parts.
The spray pattern is controlled by the shape of the nozzle, the flow rate air
pressure, and the electrostatic field generated between the electrode and
the grounded part.
Specifications
Refer to the following specifications to operate the spray gun.
Specifications are subject to change without notice.
Electrical Output
Maximum rated output voltage at the electrode 95 kV 10%
Maximum rated output current at the electrode 100 μA 10%
Air Quality Requirements
Powder spray systems require clean, dry, oil-free operating air. Moist or
oil-contaminated air can cause the powder to clog in the pump's venturi
throat, powder feed hose, or gun powder path.
Use 3-micron filter/separators with automatic drains and a refrigerated or
regenerative desiccant-type air dryer that can produce a 3.4 C (38 F) or
lower dewpoint at 7 bar (100 psi).
Equipment Rating
This equipment is rated for use in an explosive environment
(Class II, Division I).
Special Conditions for Safe Use
The Sure Coat Applicator must be used with one of the following
controllers: iControl, Vantage, or Sure Coat Automatic Rack Controller.
The equipment is intended to be used in the ambient temperature from
0 C to 40 C.
